To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, girls in Year 7 and 8 enjoyed an engaging science lesson about the less well-known achievements of women in STEM subjects which followed on perfectly from the online assembly they had this morning.
From Greek atronomer, mathematician and philosopher, Hypatia, to modern day Aerospace Engineer, Aisha Bowe, pupils were challenged to uncover all the varied and crucial scientific discoveries made or contributed to by women 🧬
Reflecting on the theme of the day, one pupil said: "I think that it`s important that women are fairly represented in STEM because they have made so many groundbreaking discoveries without the help of men and people still sometimes don`t recognise their importance. They were often underestimated for their skill despite their achievements. It is important to have a day dedicated to women and girls in STEM so that we can recognise their hard work and so we can show the future genereation of girls that they are capable of anything they put their mind to."
Whether it`s joining our Robotics Club in Year 7 🤖 or contributing to complex discussions at MedSoc in Year 12 🔬 at every stage of our girls’ journey through the High School, they are supported and encouraged to pursue whatever career they aspire to. Interested in finding out more? Visit our next Open Morning on Saturday 7 March.
The Year 9 girls were involved in a life saving workshop this week. St Johns ambulance volunteers and a few LHS sixth formers delivered a workshop on how to carry out CPR. The girls were split into groups and were able to learn about all the different steps needed to do CPR effectively. They also had a demonstration on how to apply a defibrillator successfully ❤️🩹 Thank you to all the volunteers involved in delivering this truly vital workshop.
Culture week kicked off at LHS with a bake sale at break time. It was a wonderful opportunity for the girls and staff to eat tasty treats from different cultures. Well done to all the bakers!
Last week, pupils in Year 8 took part in thought-provoking workshops led by the Holocaust Memorial Centre to understand more about the history of the Holocaust. Thinking about questions such as `what is a stereotype` and `who was responsible`, pupils were encouraged to get involved in debate and discuss their responses with their peers.
As part of our wellbeing provision, pupils in Year 10 played board games this Friday during Form time to give them some welcome time to chat and recharge batteries with friends. Opportunities like these allow our girls to connect with each other.
