Clinical Applications
Year 11: Laying the Foundations for Clinical Careers
In Year 11, students begin exploring their chosen clinical careers pathway, undertaking detailed research into university courses and entry requirements for medicine, dentistry or veterinary science applications in the UK. Working closely with subject specialists and the School’s Clinical Applications Co-ordinator, pupils develop a strong foundation and gain insight into the academic expectations of A Level study.
Clinical Applications
Sixth Form: Specialist Preparation and Application Support
During Year 12, students are supported in building a strong foundation for their clinical applications through carefully guided work experience and volunteering opportunities. These experiences are complemented by structured support in maintaining a reflective diary, enabling students to thoughtfully document and evaluate their learning an essential skill for both personal statements and interviews.
As students progress, they receive targeted preparation for key assessments, including the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test), which plays a crucial role in medicine and dentistry applications in the UK. Support includes familiarisation with the test format, practice materials and guidance on effective preparation strategies. Students attend a UCAS Discovery Day and benefit from expert advice on navigating the UCAS application process, ensuring they feel confident and well-prepared at every stage.
For those pursuing veterinary science applications, additional tailored guidance is provided. This includes preparation for relevant admissions tests required by certain universities, including Oxbridge, as well as support with situational judgement components. Students are encouraged to engage in focused, independent research alongside structured sessions, allowing them to deepen their subject knowledge and align their preparation with their chosen universities.
Alongside assessment preparation, students benefit from ongoing, personalised support with all aspects of their applications. This includes bespoke guidance on making informed and strategic university choices, as well as detailed, individual feedback on personal statements to ensure each application is as strong as possible.
Importantly, preparation for medical and clinical school interviews begins well in advance of UCAS submission deadlines. Through a combination of expert advice, skills development and tailored support, students are equipped with the confidence and experience needed to succeed in a highly competitive application process.
Clinical Applications
Clinical Pathways Enrichment Programme
Thursday enrichment sessions begin in Year 12 and give students 1.5 hours per week to focus on medical ethics, UCAT preparation and personal statement workshops. The sessions also involve learning how to write and talk reflectively, entering an independent research and poster competition, individual opportunities to present a topic of their choice, study skills advice, NHS hot topics and keeping up with the latest medical news.
Our ‘Life after LHS’ event provides further insight into the medical applications process, alongside a parent information evening to support families navigating medicine applications in the UK.
Clinical Applications
Interview Preparation
Preparation for medical school interviews begins well in advance of application deadlines. Whilst students submit their completed UCAS application in the October before Year 13, interview preparation begins long before this stage is reached. Students receive bespoke advice on strategic university choices and benefit from detailed feedback on their personal statements.
Our Interview Preparation Evenings, delivered in collaboration with Loughborough Grammar School, provide a comprehensive programme including:
- Mock interviews for medicine and clinical courses
- Presentation skills workshops
- Scenario-based role play
These experiences are designed to build confidence and ensure students are fully prepared for the demands of medical, dental and veterinary school interviews. Interview invitations are typically received between November and February of Year 13 and offers for clinical courses are released in March and April.
