The creative arts offer pupils across the Foundation a way in which they can express themselves in a mindful way. Head of Art at LHS, Lauren Fox, who promotes the importance of Art as a form of wellbeing, said:
"In the busy rhythm of school life, art as an academic subject can offer students something quietly powerful. Creativity gives young people a language beyond words – one that allows them to process emotions, explore identity, and express thoughts that might otherwise stay bottled up. Art can also nurture emotional resilience. Engaging in creative work encourages focus and mindfulness, gently pulling students into the present moment.
The act of making: sketching a line, mixing a colour, taking a photograph can be calming and grounding, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Just as importantly, creativity normalizes trial and error. Mistakes become part of the process, teaching students that growth often comes from experimentation rather than instant success.
Beyond individual wellbeing, the arts foster connection. Collaborative projects build empathy, communication, and a sense of belonging, reminding students that their perspectives matter. In giving shape to imagination, creative subjects do more than enrich education, they support mental wellbeing by helping students feel seen and capable. In a world that often asks young people to move faster, the arts give them permission to pause, reflect, and find their voice."
