In 2025, Loughborough High School will be celebrating a wealth of milestones; 175 years of history, 100 years of School Houses and 100 years of Tableaux.
From when the High School first opened in 1850, with 30 pupils and Miss Charnock as Headmistress, to the wonderful, vibrant and thriving School that it is today, we’ll be looking back at the incredible stories behind our School across its anniversary year.
When the High School first opened its doors, it gained pioneer status as the first Girls Grammar School in the UK. Whilst there were older girls’ schools in the country, they were not Grammar schools.
The original aim of the High School to provide girls with the same educational opportunities as boys remains at our core today as we continue to shape the young women that the future needs.
The Houses – Burton, Hastings, Storer and Fearon – were introduced in 1925, under the headship of Miss Bristol (Headmistress 1920-40). They were strongly connected to sport, fostering competitiveness and instilling moral qualities such as determination and resourcefulness.
The same House system remains in place today and we continue to hold regular House competitions. Girls are keen to get involved and value the sense of belonging that the Houses create.
During her leadership, Miss Bristol also began the longstanding tradition of Tableaux, a silent scene of performers who pose for several seconds while recreating works of art or dramatic scenes from history or literature.
The Tableaux tradition is still a highlight of the High School calendar, and we are looking forward to marking this special moment at Christmas, 2025.
Our new 175 logo, designed by one of our pupils, commemorates this landmark year and acknowledges the extent of the School’s rich history as we celebrate 175 Years of Loughborough High School.
