Co-curricular

At Loughborough High School, co-curricular activities are woven into the fabric of everyday school life. They are embedded into the school day and are a vital component of the rounded education and broader development we provide. Pupils are encouraged to try their hand at as many activities as possible, be it to develop their skills on the sports field or in the music hall, build on their academic passions, or learn more about the world around them. Pupils develop emotionally and socially through positive engagement in a diverse range of opportunities. The co-curricular programme encourages them to not only master talents, but to also take risks and try new activities which take them out of their comfort zone, challenging and stimulating them to become resilient, aspirational and well-rounded young citizens.

There is a wide range of activities on offer, with over 100 clubs, including Drama, Chamber Choir, Creative Writing, Symphony Orchestra, Football, Debating, Robotics and Baking. We always provide opportunities for girls to participate in whatever interests them and many of the skills developed during these experiences can be transferred and used in further education and employment. All pupils are actively involved in whole-school life. Some of our older students set up their own clubs and societies within the school, developing their leadership skills and allowing them to promote and share their interests with the wider community, their passions drawing others to participate.

Charity fundraising is a cornerstone of the Loughborough High School community, with multiple charities supported annually. Each year group selects and fundraises for a specific charity, with each tutor group from Year 7 to Year 13 appointing their own Charity Prefect, who works alongside the LHS Senior Charity Prefect and Charity Ambassador (both roles held by Year 13 students). This focus on social responsibility is mirrored in our active encouragement of volunteering. Many students engage with the local community through our Voluntary Service Unit, gaining valuable experience while making a tangible difference in the lives of others.

“A broad co-curricular programme enables pupils to explore subjects further or to challenge themselves in taking on something new. Clubs, many of which are initiated or led by pupils, include creative, academic, sporting and musical opportunities.”

House System

A key part of Loughborough High School’s co-curricular offer are our four Houses, to which all pupils and staff belong. Each House is led by a House Captain (Year 13 student), who is supported by a Head of House (staff). Within the Houses, there are House families, made up of girls from each year group, providing a good opportunity to get to know girls from across the school. Regular House assemblies, competitions and events foster fun, friendly rivalry, socialising and charity support, with pupils representing their House with the support and encouragement of their peers. The House system facilitates a sense of identity and belonging, enabling all pupils to flourish and become their ‘best self’.

“Pupils are proud to be members of the school community and take opportunities to contribute to it. Sixth-form pupils provide positive role models in their leadership roles as prefects and House Captains.”
