Why study Politics?

Few subjects are more central to your everyday life than ‘government and politics’. Politics dominates domestic and foreign news, shaping the society you inherit as adults. By studying Politics, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how governments and institutions impact your life, from education and healthcare to national security and the economy. This knowledge will enable you to engage with current events, think critically about complex issues, and develop informed opinions on the world around you. 

Entry requirements 

Politics is a prose-based subject, so a Grade 6 in a humanities subject is required, as is a genuine interest in politics and current affairs. 

Some of the topics studied include: 

  • Democracy and participation 
  • Political parties and pressure groups 
  • Core political ideas like Liberalism, Conservatism, and Socialism 
  • US government and politics, including the Constitution and Federalism 

Politics is a highly relevant subject in the modern world, as it shapes the decisions that affect our daily lives and influences global events. With the rise of social media, political awareness and engagement have become more important than ever and studying Politics will provide you with a nuanced understanding of the complex issues that shape our world, from climate change and economic inequality to social justice and human rights. 

Studying Politics can lead to a range of career opportunities, including roles in law, journalism, international business, technology, and public service, making it a beneficial subject for those interested in pursuing careers in these sectors. By developing strong analysis, critical thinking, and communication skills, you’ll be well-equipped to succeed in careers such as policy analysis, advocacy, or diplomacy. You will also be well-prepared to pursue further study in fields such as international relations, economics, or law. 

Politics pairs well with subjects such as History, Economics, English, and Business for university applications, as it develops key skills like analysis, critical thinking, and effective communication. By studying Politics, you’ll learn to construct and defend arguments, write clearly and concisely, and engage in informed discussions, making you a strong candidate for a variety of academic and professional pursuits. 

Politics is an amazing A Level to study, especially if you are interested in current affairs. It allows you to keep up with relevant information about the country, as well as understand how the electoral and party systems work. It is an incredibly detailed subject, and the support from the teachers is amazing.
