Classical Civilisation

Why study Classical Civilisation?

The influence of the classical world is all around us and studying Classical Civilisation gives you the opportunity to explore the literature and culture of ancient Greeks and Romans, reading famous authors such as Homer, Virgil, Aristophanes and Sophocles. This course enables you to assess the contribution made by these two great civilisations to our lives today. 

Entry requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements for the A Level Classical Civilisation course, but students should have achieved at least a Grade 7 in English Literature and History (if studied). An enjoyment of Greek and Roman mythology and a willingness to read and discuss literature are necessary for this course. 

Course Content 

The course involves studying three components: 

• The World of the Hero: exploring the lasting legacy of the Homeric world and its attitudes and values 
• Culture and the Arts: studying one component taken from Greek Theatre, Imperial Image, Invention of the Barbarian, Greek Art. Components in this group involve the study of visual and material culture. In all except Greek Art this is combined with the study of literature in translation. 
• Beliefs and Ideas: studying either Greek Religion or Politics of the Late Republic. Components in this group involve an area of classical thought, in combination with either the study of literature in translation or visual/ material culture.

Relevance 

Classical Civilisation is a well-regarded A Level that serves as a good base for any literary or historical degree course, and its skills are beneficial for a wide range of careers. 

Career versatility 

An A Level in Classical Civilisation can lead to various career paths, including archaeology, drama, English, history, law, psychology, philosophy, politics, art, and more. The knowledge gained from the course is valuable for many jobs that do not require specific degree subjects. 

Academic flexibility and skills developed: 

The course helps develop skills of critical analysis and evaluation, as well as the ability to articulate informed responses using appropriate evidence to formulate coherent arguments with substantiated evidence-based judgements. These skills are highly valued by universities and employers alike. 

A-level Classical Civilisation has been one of my favourite subjects. From epic heroes to world-changing wars and political drama, every topic is engaging. I’d recommend it to anyone!
