Landmark CCF Annual Review Celebrates Loughborough High School’s 175th Anniversary

Loughborough Grammar School’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF), which includes girls from Loughborough High School (LHS) proudly hosted its 67th Annual Review earlier this month. The event coincides with the 175th anniversary of LHS, the oldest academic girls’ school in the country, and welcomed back alumna and distinguished Army officer, Captain Amy Cooper MVO, as this year’s Reviewing Officer.

The CCF Annual Review began with formal proceedings on the Quad, including a display from the Corps of Drums and a parade accompanied by the Loughborough Schools Foundation’s Symphonic Wind Band. Captain Cooper received the General Salute before overseeing a series of events showcasing the skill, discipline, and commitment of the cadets, including a drill competition, the Cadet Gun Run, and prizegiving.

Captain Cooper, a former LHS student (2002–2009), has enjoyed a remarkable military career since commissioning into the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 2016. Her service includes NATO operations in Estonia, leadership roles within the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, and ceremonial duties of national significance. She was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) for her pivotal role in the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and also participated in the coronation of King Charles III.

“It was a tremendous honour to welcome Captain Cooper back to Loughborough Schools Foundation,” said Major Ben Ward, Contingent Commander. “Her journey is a powerful example to our cadets of where, with the right amount of dedication, determination and leadership, their CCF journey could lead.”

The experiences and lessons I’ve learned whilst serving have been so important, and I am certain that your time in the CCF will similarly shape your futures. You’ve learnt to push beyond your comfort zone, persevere through challenges, and to support your fellow cadets. The relationships you build and the experiences you have had in CCF will stay with you for a lifetime.

The event also highlighted the evolving role of Loughborough High School within the CCF. Since 2014, LHS pupils have participated in the contingent, with opportunities now available from Year 10 onwards. The CCF Annual Review is a major occasion in a calendar of special events marking the School’s 175th anniversary.

“While we proudly reflect on our history, we are equally excited about our future,” said Dr Fiona Miles, Head of Loughborough High School. “The Annual Review, with one of our own alumnae at its heart, is a wonderful way to celebrate leadership, service, and tradition.”
