Sixth Form Years 12 -13

At Loughborough High School Sixth Form, students benefit from a rich academic and personal development experience. All Sixth Form students select three A Level subjects; each studied across ten periods per week. In addition to their A Levels, students participate in a broad and balanced programme that supports wellbeing and personal growth.

Tuesday afternoons are dedicated to Health and Wellbeing, while Thursday afternoons offer a wide range of enrichment activities. Every student also takes part in a weekly PSHCE lesson and an academic extension session, such as working towards the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a highly regarded qualification that enhances university applications.

Form Time and Pastoral Support in the Sixth Form

Our exceptional pastoral support is a cornerstone of the Sixth Form experience. Sixth Form tutor groups are intentionally small (10–14 students), enabling tailored support. Students meet daily with their Sixth Form form tutor, who provides continuous guidance throughout their two-year journey.

Every Friday morning includes a dedicated form period focusing on soft skills such as communication, leadership, and resilience. Individual one-to-one sessions, access to pastoral leads, and a professional counsellor ensure each student feels supported, academically, emotionally, and personally.

Beyond A Levels: Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

Life in the Sixth Form extends well beyond academic study. Our enrichment programme includes participation in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), offering military-style training through the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and Corps of Drums. Students can take part in activities such as sailing, glider flights, rifle shooting, and field training, which promote teamwork and confidence.

Students also contribute to the wider community through our Voluntary Service Unit and Primary Partnership Programme, building valuable leadership and communication skills while making a meaningful impact.

Social Life in the Sixth Form

The Sixth Form community at Loughborough High School is vibrant and inclusive. Students enjoy a rich social calendar, including school trips, cross-Foundation balls, quiz nights, and collaborative events with other local schools. These experiences help forge lasting friendships and unforgettable memories.

Student Leadership and Female Empowerment

We offer a wide range of leadership opportunities tailored to students’ interests and strengths. Sixth Form students may apply for prestigious roles such as Head Girl, House Captain, or other leadership positions within clubs, committees, and societies. All leadership pathways are supported by staff mentors, and we place a strong emphasis on female leadership, empowering students to become resilient, empathetic, and confident young women.

Academic Extension and University Preparation

In addition to their A Level studies, Sixth Form students are encouraged to pursue academic enrichment through the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). These opportunities help develop research, writing, and independent learning skills – essential preparation for university and future careers. The EPQ allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth and is highly valued by universities during applications and interviews.
